Soldiers of the 5th Infantry Division in Malaya. Japanese Infantry were excellent jungle fighters, giving them a huge advantage in many campaigns in the South Pacific. In the Malayan Campaign, British officers believed the thick Malayan Jungle to be impenetrable. That mistake proved Costly, as the Malayan campaign can be considered the greatest victory in the History of Imperial Japan.

Japanese Infantry advancing on Bicycles, Malaya 1941
Use of Bicycles in the Malayan campaign gave Imperial troops a great tactical advantage. The Japanese Army, which never saw the same degree of mechanization and motorization as many of it’s contemporaries did, used Bicycles in the Malayan campaign to increase the mobility of it’s troops. Japanese Soldiers were able to out maneuver British Commonwealth forces in the Malayan Campaign, a significant factor in it’s success.

Infantry charging with support from a light machine gun, Unknown theater.
Japanese Army doctrine was focused on the offensive as a way to dictate the pace of a battle. Japanese Infantry often employed frontal assault tactics, to mixed success. In China, an infantry assault often overwhelmed the opposing Chinese defenses, but in the Pacific, massed charges, many times employed against a larger force, were time and time again devastated by American units due to their superior firepower.
